Transforming lives through financial advocacy
The R1 Patient Financial Advocacy program is designed to support uninsured patients across the country by helping them secure the funding for necessary healthcare services. Our dedicated team of financial counselors leverages leading-edge technology to identify patients who are self-pay or uninsured. By offering personalized, one-on-one support, our counselors assist patients in navigating the frequently daunting process of securing healthcare funding.
Over the past year, our efforts have yielded remarkable results. We have successfully helped nearly 100,000 patients transition from being uninsured to fully insured. This transformation not only alleviates the financial burden on patients but also enhances their overall healthcare experience, allowing them to focus on their well-being without the stress of financial uncertainty.
A comprehensive approach to patient advocacy
Our approach to patient financial advocacy is rooted in empathy, education and proactive engagement. We adhere to the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s (HFMA) Patient Financial Communications Best Practices®, which emphasize advocacy, education and personal connection. By fostering a supportive environment, we empower patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage and ensure they receive the maximum benefits for which they qualify.
Our financial counselors are committed to reaching out to 99% of all uninsured inpatients and 80% of emergency room patients, screening them for available financial options. This proactive approach ensures that patients are aware of their options and can access the necessary resources to secure coverage.
Comprehensive support for patients
At R1, our advocacy efforts extend beyond healthcare coverage. We collaborate with clients to streamline charity care and financial assistance processes through our Presumptive Charity Program. By utilizing our proprietary scoring approach, we can identify and recommend patients who are likely to qualify for assistance, optimizing the charity process according to each client’s specific policies.
For patients requiring additional support, our financial counselors are equipped to identify other funding sources, such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. By facilitating the application process, we help ensure that patients’ basic needs are met alongside their healthcare requirements.

Our Patient Financial Advocacy program is filled with stories of hope and transformation. For example, our counselors recently assisted an uninsured patient who faced significant challenges in obtaining Medicaid coverage due to strict deadlines and lack of documentation. Through persistence and collaboration with the patient’s family and state Medicaid office, our team secured retroactive coverage, saving the patient nearly $1 million in medical debt.
