Joe Flanagan is Chief Executive Officer of R1, an industry leader in managing and intelligently automating healthcare revenue management with more than $80B Net Patient Revenue under management and 34,000 associates around the world. He has served as a member of the R1 Board of Directors since 2016. He is a proven leader who brings over 20 years of deep healthcare revenue management and technology expertise to his role at R1.
Joe first joined R1 in 2013 as Chief Operating Officer and has since served in a variety of leadership positions, including as Chief Executive Officer from May 2016 to January 2023, and as Executive Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer from January 2023 until June 2023. Both as CEO and Executive Advisor, Joe drove significant growth, continued operational excellence, technology leadership and value creation for R1’s client partners. He helped grow the company’s global presence, launching operations in three countries. He also led the acquisitions of VisitPay, SCI Solutions and Cloudmed, establishing R1 as a technology leader in patient experience, revenue intelligence and advanced robotic process automation.
Since rejoining as CEO in 2024, Joe has been instrumental in executing key growth initiatives, such as R1’s exclusive partnership with Palantir and the launch of R37, an advanced AI lab dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare financial performance. Joe continues to pioneer new operating models and innovative solutions to transform the revenue cycle industry, as he has throughout his tenure with R1.
Prior to joining R1, Joe served as the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations and Supply Chain at Applied Materials, a global leader in materials engineering solutions. He also held leadership positions at Nortel Networks from 2006 to 2010, as well as several management positions at General Electric from 1993 to 2006. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Systems from the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
