R1’s Fifth Annual ESG Report Highlights Responsible Global Citizenship

The latest environmental, social and governance report captures R1’s commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability across its global footprint.

MURRAY, Utah, April 22, 2025 — R1, a leading provider of technology-driven financial solutions for health systems and care organizations, is excited to release its 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report. The annual report highlights R1’s ongoing commitment to responsible, inclusive and sustainable business practices, underscoring its mission to make healthcare work better for all. 

“Over the past year, our ESG efforts have helped drive meaningful progress across our organization, from improving healthcare access and patient advocacy to strengthening employee engagement, community partnerships and environmental sustainability,” said Joe Flanagan, CEO of R1. “These efforts are fundamental to our business and culture and reflect our passion for doing what’s right—for our clients, their patients, our people and the communities we serve.” 

Key accomplishments in the 2024 report include: 

  • Supporting Patients Through Financial Advocacy. R1 helped nearly 100,000 patients convert from uninsured to fully insured and recommended over 1.1 million patients and their families for financial assistance over the past three years. R1 proactively connects with 99% of uninsured inpatients and 80% of emergency room patients to secure financial options. 
  • Fostering a Great Place to Work. R1 was again certified as a Great Place to Work® in both the U.S. and India. The company also was named a Leader in LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for the third year in a row.  
  • Cultivating an Inclusive Culture. R1 expanded its Employee Resource Communities, launched new leadership development programs and continued to prioritize inclusion and belonging across a global workforce of more than 34,500 employees. 
  • Investing in Innovation. R1 has invested more than $550 million in technology and analytics over the past five years. Its digital self-service platform, R1 Entri™, improves patient financial experiences and achieved Net Promoter Scores averaging around 52 for 2024. In 2024, technology innovation automated 189 million manual tasks and earned Best in KLAS designations in three categories. 
  • Serving Communities Around the World. Through its Helping Hands program, more than 2,400 R1 employees volunteered for over 14,600 hours in support of over 850 organizations. R1 also contributed over $212,000 through the R1 Associate Assistance Fund to support employees experiencing unexpected financial hardships. 
  • Driving Environmental Progress. In partnership with nonprofit organization iamgurgaon, R1 held its annual India tree-planting event with 66 R1 employees and 25 children from Maanas Shiksha School, planting a portion of this year’s saplings to support the restoration of the Aravalli mountains habitat. This event is part of the company’s five-year commitment, and R1 has successfully planted 7,500 trees over the past three years. Employees in India and the Philippines also participated in sustainability efforts such as wheelchair assembly drives, solar lamp distribution and creating sensory boxes for children with special needs.

The ESG strategy at R1 aligns with leading global standards, including the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
